A bench at the end of a bed is a convenient piece of furniture in a bedroom.

Buying a long bench or ottoman can get expensive, but you can easily make your own.

To get designer style on a shoestring, simply take the top off a timber stool and replace it with a woven leather seat. Or build a budget timber coffee table without the top.

Use the leather bench to hold cushions or a throw rug, or for books and a breakfast tray for when you want to read in bed.

BUDGET TIP Leather straps are more economical than buying upholstery hides, which come in pieces of several square metres.

Once you get the hang of working with leather, you can branch out and weave a floor rug

Step 1. Cut the straps

Position a 38mm wide and 1200mm long leather strap along the bench and mark to length with enough left over to wrap over and under the frame. Repeat with a 32mm strap across the bench. Cut the number of straps needed to length using a utility knife.

Step 2. Secure the straps

Lay the long straps evenly spaced on a flat surface and position a short side of the bench frame on top near the strap ends. Take each strap over the frame, securing with an upholstery nail using a hammer. Pull the straps taut and secure to the other short side.

Step 3. Weave the seat

Lay the cross straps evenly spaced on a flat level surface and position the long side of the bench frame on top near the strap ends. Secure each cross strap to the frame with an upholstery nail, then weave them through the long straps and secure to the other side.
