Setting up a drip-line irrigation system on a timer ensures the garden is watered efficiently. To save water as well, you can install a tank and harvest rainwater for garden use.

Slimline tanks range from 480-4000L, with a 2000L capacity storing enough water for the average backyard vegetable patch.

For basic watering needs, opt for a standard 2100L slimline tank that has a small pump attached to pressurise the system.

Position it on reinforced concrete and against a wall near a downpipe. For a tank this size, the slab must be at least 2400 x 900 x 75mm in size.

To secure the tank, mark the position of galvanised M8 Dynabolts in the slots in the moulded feet in the tank base. Move the tank aside to drill 8mm holes in the concrete to 60mm deep, then secure with the Dynabolts.

TIP A tank with a larger capacity can be plumbed for indoor use.

Step 1. Join up the inlet

Use 90mm stormwater pipe to connect the downpipe from the roof gutter to the tank inlet hole in the strainer cover. Use adhesive to secure all joints except the last inlet so the pipe and the strainer cover can be removed later for clearing debris.

Step 2. Attach the overflow

Cut 90mm pipe to fit from the overflow connection at the top of the tank to the drainage pit. Use adhesive to secure all connections except the mosquito screen cap that is removable for cleaning. Attach pipe brackets to a wall or fence.

Step 3. Attach the pump

To absorb any movement and vibration between the pump inlet and the tank outlet tap, connect them with 300mm long braided flex line, sealing with plumber’s tape. Secure the pump to the concrete with Dynabolts, then connect the power supply.
