In this DIY video, we show you how to make a handy drill bit depth gauge so you can drill a hole to exactly the right depth.

Often when drilling a hole, you will need to drill to a certain depth. This may be because you don't want to create a hole on the other side of the workpiece, or when using dowels to join two pieces of timber.

Whatever the case, it can be difficult to accurately drill a hole to a specific depth without a depth gauge.

You can purchase adjustable depth collars to prevent the drill bit from going all the way through, but if you don't have one handy, you can make one in a few seconds using masking tape.

All you need to do is hold the drill bit next to the workpiece at the desired depth, then wrap a piece of masking tape around the bit flush with the top of the timber.

When drilling the hole, drill only to the start of the tape to create a hole that's exactly as deep as you want it.
