If your kitchen is small and cramped or badly designed, make it more user-friendly and free up the bench space by stacking, packing and hanging the most commonly used items so that they’re always within easy reach.

In this blog we list 4 storage ideas that will help you save space in your kitchen.

Storing spices can be challenging for people with even the largest kitchen.

Spices should ideally be stored away from light and heat to keep them from going stale, and arranged so that minimal mess is created when they are being used.

Organising spices in a custom draw will keep them fresh, organised and neat and allow for better access when cooking.

To make a custom drawer, measure and cut a plywood sheet to fit into the top of the drawer.

Use a jigsaw to cut a series of customised openings, measured to fit the containers but supporting the lids for easy access.

2. Hanging wall storage

Larger utensils like graters and soup ladles can clog up valuable drawer space, or they may not even fit in the drawer in the first place!

If you have free wallspace above the sink, consider wall-mounting a steel track to arrange cooking utensils and equipment such as paper towels.

Secure using timber screws into wall studs and attach hooks to hold lightweight cutlery storage units.

This solution will free up valuable drawer and bench space and keep utensils conveniently close at hand.

3. Portable Kitchen Trolley

Set up a portable kitchen trolley to fit under a benchtop for extra workspace when cooking.

Secure a chopping board to the top that can be removed for cleaning and add extra rails for hanging dish towels.

Adding storage underneath benchtops adds utility to your kitchen without clutter.

If you do not have any under bench space handy, you can still invest in a portable kitchen trolley and wheel it in to the kitchen when needed, like when preparing for dinner parties.

Forget bulky knife blocks, create more streamlined storage by including knife slots directly into your countertop.

To make a 25mm slot in a benchtop, drill two holes side by side using a 2mm twist bit on either side of the slot and cut between using a jigsaw and narrow curve cutting blade.

Ensure the underside of the bench is boxed in for safety.

Built-in counter storage allows you to store knives in a single file so that less space is used and also creates an attractive display.
